Networking

In our efforts to stimulate debate on matters of ecological security, we continue to network with other groups in discussions on conservation, local governance and poverty alleviation. We associate with several existing platforms comprising multiple agencies including other non-government organizations, government departments, peoples representatives, opinion leaders, academicians and researchers. We are members of several networks at national and international levels that contribute to policy formulation.

FES works in close co-ordination with the State Governments. Where State Level Coordination Committees (SLCC) represented by the Secretaries of the relevant departments, continue to oversee the progress of projects in addition to facilitating their better implementation, the District Level Coordination Committees (DLCC) have helped convergence of several government programmes in the villages.

FES was a Member of the Working Group on Forests for the Environment and Forests Sector and Working Group on Public-Private Partnerships, constituted by the Planning Commission as part of the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-12) formulation process, for the purpose of devising institutional mechanisms for the improved performance of Watershed Development Programmes. We also contributed to the discussions of the Working Group for Natural Resource Management on common property resources and village institutions, as well to the Sub Group on fodder production enhancement on measures to enhance fodder production.

We are awarded special Consultative Status membership at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

We are the Regional Focal Point (RFP) for South Asia of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) NGO Network. We continue to work in our capacity as RFP to act as a channel between the GEF Secretariat and the regional level organizations. FES also chairs the Governance Subcommittee of the GEF NGO network and oversees the Membership, Governance, Selection and Accreditation related issues. We seek to build a proactive regional network to address common issues of concern with respect to the GEF focal areas, chiefly land degradation and climate change.

We are anchoring an initiative by a consortium of organizations the Rainfed Livestock Network (RLN), which aims to synthesize lessons for policy advocacy and programmatic action for livestock development in the arid and semi-arid regions. Our partners in this initiative are Lokhit Pashu Palak Samiti(LPPS), Watershed Support Services and Activities Network (WASSAN), Sahjeevan, Sewa Mandir, and Mitan. The initiative is supported by Ford Foundation.

We have been institutional members of the International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC) and have been regularly participating in its Biennial Conferences. FES hosted the 13th edition of the Biennial Conference of the Commons (IASC 2011), which was held in South Asia for the first time in the city of Hyderabad, India between 10-14 Jan 2011, and which aimed for larger policy and programmatic focus on Commons in the coming Five Year Plans.

We are members of the World Conservation Union and contribute to their resource base with our experiences from the ground.

We are members of the International Society for ecological Economics (ISEE) and its India Chapter (INSEE)

We are part of a national consortium of civil society organizations coming together to share experiences, raise concerns and find ways ahead in the smooth implementation of the NREGA.

We are part of a Civil Society Organization initiative and the Future of Conservation Network, a collective of non-government organizations working on conservation and livelihood issues across the country, collectively seeking answers to complex questions concerning people, livelihoods, protected areas, forest management and species conservation.
